Boston Globe - Voters in Maine town reject water ordinance

WELLS, Maine — People in a southern Maine town have rejected a proposal that would have allowed for large-scale water extraction operations by companies like Poland Spring water company.

Voters in Wells rejected the ordinance by a margin of more than 2-1.

The proposal would have set new regulations that would have applied to daily water extraction of 20,000 gallons or more.

The issue first emerged in 2008 when the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Wells Water District considered a deal allowing Poland Spring to extract up to 250,000 gallons of water a day from an aquifer in Wells.
