Communications:
Grant Writer
For 35 years, Corporate Accountability International has successfully challenged corporations like Nestlé, General Electric, and Philip Morris to halt abusive practices that threaten human rights, public health, the environment and our democracy. The organization is expanding—and leading campaigns challenging some of the world’s most powerful industries from food and agriculture to water and Big Tobacco. Think Outside the Bottle exposes the truth behind bottled water marketing and defends the human right to water in the face of increasing corporate control and Public Water Works! galvanizes support for public water systems. Value [the] Meal challenges the fast food industry to stop driving an epidemic of diet-related disease and helps build a more sustainable food system. Our campaign to Challenge Big Tobacco protects the first-ever corporate accountability treaty from tobacco industry interference.
The Grant Writer will join a strong and committed team to help build the organization’s capacity to challenge corporate power. The Grant Writer will work closely with the Communications Director and the Chief of Staff to drive the organization’s foundation work. In addition, the Writer will also contribute to the overall work of the communications team. We are looking for a strong writer with a fundraising background who would thrive in an enthusiastic and campaign-oriented atmosphere.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Draft, edit, research and proofread foundation communications, including letters of interest, proposals, and reports.
- Draft, edit and proofread additional materials as needed, including reports, campaign, membership and media outreach pieces.
- Analyze and synthesize media, campaign, and organizational developments for program officers.
- Coordinate the review and approval of communications by senior staff.
- Write and edit content for the organization’s website.
- Maintain comprehensive, accurate and up-to-date files, records and systems.
- Participate in organization-wide planning, fundraising and campaign activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice and progressive social change.
- At least four years of writing experience in a non-profit setting, including a proven track record in development writing.
- A portfolio demonstrating the ability to write quickly, concisely, and in a manner compelling to philanthropic partners.
- Enthusiasm for the organization’s mission and campaigns, as well as a passion for building the organization.
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks and consistently meet deadlines.
- Highly motivated and tenacious, with great attention to detail.
- Grassroots organizing experience a major plus.
- Computer skills: proficiency with Excel, Microsoft Office a must; experience with design software like Adobe Photoshop, CRM’s like Salsa, and CMS’s like Drupal a bonus.
ACCOUNTABILITY: The Grant Writer is accountable to the Communications Director.
SALARY RANGE AND HOURS: Commensurate with experience, with a generous benefits package. Full-time preferred.

Campaign Challenging Big Tobacco Research Internship
The Campaign Challenging Big Tobacco Research Intern will advance the campaign’s joint work plan with the World Health Organization Tobacco Free Initiative by researching and monitoring the tobacco industries around the world and populating a database of information and tools used to challenge tobacco industry interference in public health policy. The projects will be coupled with training sessions on action planning, campaign research, media outreach, fundraising, and many other topics.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Further develop the Campaign Challenging Big Tobacco and Corporate Accountability International’s analysis of the tobacco industry, tobacco industry efforts to interfere in the implementation of the global tobacco treaty, and policies that effectively safeguard public policy from industry interference.
- Monitor, track and provide analysis on issues relevant to tobacco and the tobacco industry including market and polling data, and the health effects of tobacco policies;
- Monitor and analyze developments in national and international policies and industry market data;
- Advance the Campaign Challenging Big Tobacco campaign strategies, with a focus on building international support for broad implementation of the life-saving health measures of the global tobacco treaty and challenging industry interference.
- Develop corporate research profiles that track industry performance and trends as well as provide detailed information relevant to the operations of our corporate targets; and
- Assist with the preparation of policy briefs and written materials for internal and external consumption, which may include corporate profiles, blog postings, and campaign materials for international meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS:

- Highly effective written and verbal communication skills;
- Organizational skills and the ability to juggle several tasks while meeting deadlines;
- Experience in a high-energy campaign or non-profit setting preferable;
- Commitment to bringing the campaign back to your campus or community;
- Fluency in Spanish or French a plus;
- Relevant graduate level coursework or professional experience a plus;
- Experience developing and maintaining Google sites or a similar online tool.

Development and Membership Internship
The Development and Membership Intern will work with our team of fundraisers and membership outreach staff as they organize and engage our members across the country in support of our campaigns. The intern will also help build and refine our list of current and potential major donors to support Corporate Accountability International’s campaigns.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Communicate with members and respond to member information requests;
- Lead and track efforts to cultivate members and develop their understanding of our campaigns;
- Support administrative systems, including updating member records and organizing member data;
- Conduct philanthropic and prospect research;
- Help design and coordinate special mailings to members;
- Conduct media research and assist in the creation of face to face fundraising materials;
- Help recruit new members through targeted campaign outreach;

Finance & Accounting Internship
The Finance and Accounting Intern will assist in performing accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial reporting, preparing state registrations and will help prepare for the annual audit. This is an excellent opportunity to get hands-on experience in a non-profit Finance department.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work closely with the CFO and Financial Manager on income processing and related receivable issues;
- Assist the Financial Manager on the weekly preparation and printing of vendor checks;
- Regularly pull together all the required state non-profit registration paperwork;
- Help the Finance Department in bank reconciliation;
- Assist with cash flow and budget.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated commitment to corporate accountability and progressive social change;
- BS in Accounting or Business Administration;
- Good working knowledge of accounting/ finance through prior work experience or in the classroom;
- Strong attention to details, process-oriented, and self-motivated;
- Enjoys solving puzzles;
- Good organizational skills;
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.

Grants Research Internship
The Grants Research Intern will work with our foundations team to identify prospective foundations and build and refine our list of current and potential grant makers to support Corporate Accountability International’s campaigns.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct grants research using the Foundations Directory Online and other online tools;
- Track efforts to cultivate foundations and develop their understanding of our campaigns;
- Support administrative systems, including updating foundations records and organizing data;
- Draft summaries of researched foundations and recommend next steps;
- Help evaluate prospective grant makers;
- Participate in campaign and organizational building activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated commitment to corporate accountability and progressive social change;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially on the phone;
- Good organizational skills, attention to detail, professional demeanor and the ability to juggle several tasks while meeting deadlines;

Non-Profit Administration Internship
The Non-Profit Administration Intern will play a unique role in the organization by supporting projects such as implementation of an outreach program to identify and hire top-notch candidates for entry-level to senior staff positions or developing systems for supporting campaign actions. This internship is an excellent introduction to non-profit administration.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage systems for recording and tracking campaign and organizational outreach contacts;
- Post, update, and monitor current job and internship announcements on various websites and listservs;
- Field job and internship candidate inquiry calls and emails;
- Develop and design materials, organize existing materials;
- Help manage online databases and create systems for shared online resources;
- Participates in key campaign events, and occasionally represent organization at outreach events;
- Provide support for planning and scheduling staff orientations and trainings;
- Participate in campaign and organizational building activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated commitment to corporate accountability and/or progressive social change;
- Experience in a high-energy campaign or non-profit setting preferable;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
