New York Times- Ways to Reduce Corporate Influence in Elections

To the Editor:

Re “Justices, 5-4, Reject Corporate Campaign Spending Limit” (front page, Jan. 22):
President Obama had it right when he said that the Supreme Court’s ruling is “a major victory for Big Oil, Wall Street banks, health insurance companies and other powerful interests that marshal their power every day in Washington to drown out the voices of everyday Americans.”
 
For the last 30 years Corporate Accountability International has advocated for strong campaign finance laws because when large corporations that abuse the public’s health and our environment have the ability to influence the government, we forfeit our personal freedoms and the integrity of our democracy.
 
The Fair Elections Now Act, a bill currently being considered by Congress, would create a strong model for publicly financed campaigns. Unless all of us, including our elected officials, act immediately, attempts to stop dangerous and irresponsible actions by corporate abusers will be even more difficult to realize.
